(A Brief Glimpse of ABHYAS Content - Have aLook !!!!)

History of Clothing

History of Clothing:

  • In ancient Egypt, flax and cotton plants were cultivated near the River Nile and were used for making fabric. Early humans used to wear large leaves, animal skins and fur as clothes to wrap around their bodies to keep themselves warm during winters. When people began to settle in agricultural communities, people learnt to weave twigs and grass into mats etc.
  • As people settled down and started farming, they learned to weave vines and animal fleece to make fabrics. In the next stage of civilisation, flax and cotton were woven into garments. In those times, people just draped the fabric to cover themselves. It was only after the invention of the sewing needle that people started stitching their garments. Even today, in older cultures like India, you see people wearing unstitched garments like turbans, saris and dhotis.
  • Later, humans developed the technique for spinning and weaving cloth from the fluffy substance of the cotton plant. The clothing was invented between 50,000 and 1,00,000 years ago. In India, the use of cotton spread around 3000 BC.
  • In China, silkworms were domesticated to produce silk fibres. Women used to wear sari and men used to wear dhoti. With invention of Fibre: fabrics are made from certain types of fibres. Fibres are long, strong and flexible thread-like materials.
  • Some common materials used for clothing in different ancient civilizations include:

  • Animal Skins and Furs: In colder regions, people relied on animal skins and furs to create warm clothing. This practice was common among early humans and various ancient cultures.
  • Wool: The wool of sheep and other animals was widely used for clothing in many ancient civilizations. Wool garments provided warmth and were commonly worn in regions with colder climates.
  • Silk: Silk, produced by silkworms, was a luxurious fabric in ancient China. The Chinese kept the secret of silk production closely guarded, and silk became a valuable commodity in trade.
  • Linen: Linen, made from the fibers of the flax plant, was used in ancient Egypt and other regions. It was known for its breathability and was often used for summer clothing.
  • Cotton: Cotton was cultivated and used for clothing in ancient civilizations such as those in the Indian subcontinent and the Americas. Cotton garments were lightweight and comfortable.
  • Leather: Leather, made from animal hides, was used for creating durable and protective clothing, especially in cultures with a focus on hunting or warfare.
  • Plant Fibers: Apart from flax (used for linen), other plant fibers like hemp were used for clothing in various ancient cultures.
  • Metal: In some cases, metal, such as gold or copper, was woven into fabrics to create luxurious and decorative garments, especially for royalty and elite classes.
